There Are No Shortcuts
At KIPP STRIVE Academy, we believe there are no shortcuts to success. Our teachers, students and parents sign the KIPP Commitment to Excellence to ensure everyone understands the dedication and hard work it takes to obtain a college education. To ensure all students obtain the knowledge and skills they need to be successful on the “climb to college,” we offer more time in school. Students attend school each week day from 7:30 am until 5:00 pm. We provide additional tutoring on select Saturdays throughout the year. Additionally, KIPP STRIVE Academy begins the regular school year with a summer session to introduce our new students to all our routines and procedures and it provide opportunities for our returning students to adjust to the new school year and routines.
Our Academic Program
Our school design represents a unique and innovative opportunity for a community in need of educational alternatives. We provide students aged 10-14 years with four years of seamless education, emphasizing academic rigor, frequent assessment, data driven decisions and high expectations.
KIPP STRIVE Academy creates and maintains a small school environment in the middle school program. Due to the small size of our school, we are able to establish and maintain a strong school culture, individualize instruction for those that require additional support and ultimately increase student achievement. We expect that our middle school students will develop a solid foundation of skills and be prepared for the rigors of a college preparatory high school curriculum. After students graduate from KIPP STRIVE Academy, we fully expect that they will be ready to enter the top high schools and eventually the top colleges and universities in the nation.
Each grade level has varying schedules, but a student at KIPP STRIVE Academy might spend their day with the following schedule:
Work Hard. Be Nice.
KIPP STRIVE Academy issues "Scholar Dollars” for both individual students and classes of students as a reward to those students or classes that exhibit the values of KIPP STRIVE Academy. Students receive paychecks on a weekly basis reflecting their gain or loss of Scholar Dollars and therefore their progress in upholding the values of the school. Homework completion and behavior reports also are reflected in the school’s paycheck system. Scholar Dollar totals determine group or individual awards as well as field trip participation.
Our students work extremely hard, and we reward that effort with fun activities and enrichments that ensure their long days are fun and engaging. At KIPP STRIVE Academy we offer the following extra-curricular activities:
End-of-the Year Field Lesson Destinations
We also provide our students the opportunity to experience life outside their community and state. At the end of each school year we take our students on out-of-state field lessons to make their classroom learning come to life and to provide them with adventures they might not have the opportunity to experience. At KIPP STRIVE Academy we have traveled to Washington DC, West Virginia, Walt Disney World and Puerto Rico. Our KIPPsters also participate in a three year Civil Rights Immersion experience called the Sojourn to the Past Project. Our students travel to the major historical sites in the South where the fight for civil rights was the most pronounced. Our students travel to Birmingham to visit the Civil Rights Institute and the 16th Street Baptist Church; they travel to Selma to learn the history of Bloody Sunday and walk the Edmund Pettus Bridge; and they travel to Montgomery to visit the Civil Rights Memorial, the Freedom Rides Museum and the Rosa Parks Museum. They also tour Alabama State University. After three years, our students will have an in-depth knowledge base of the Civil Rights movement, encouraging them to be the next generation of leaders.
